Rebecka Nakamato, mother of two, marathon runner and passionate bitcoiner, shares her journey from working as a social worker to her current job at Goobit, where she is responsible for organizing events, writing the BTCX newsletter and leading the global women’s network Les Femmes Orange (LFO). She also shares her thoughts on the power structures of money and why she sees bitcoin as a solution to creating a more equitable economy.
Welcome Rebecka. Please tell us a little about yourself and your role at Goobit.
Thanks, it's great to be part of it! I'm a mother of two who likes to run races, and a proud bitcoiner. My background is actually quite different - I worked as a social worker for ten years before I slipped into the bitcoin world.
Today I work at Goobit with administration, organize events and trainings about bitcoin, and have established the global women's network Les Femmes Orange (LFO) in Stockholm, a supportive network that also exists in other parts of Europe. I also write BTCX newsletters, blog posts and debate articles. It is a dynamic role in a dynamic industry to say the least!
What inspired you to start with bitcoin, and what has continued to drive your interest in cryptocurrencies?
I am new to bitcoin, with a background in sociology and no previous interest in money. The change began when I left a secure job, saw the effects of inflation, and read an eye-opening book about how huge amounts of money were printed during the pandemic. Bitcoin became the answer to questions I didn’t even know I had. The more people who use bitcoin, the faster we can move away from a financial system built on debt and corruption.
What opportunities have you experienced in your role in the crypto industry, and what insights have been most valuable to you?
I don't see myself as part of the crypto industry, but as part of the bitcoin movement. That's an important distinction, because I've never been into altcoins or trading – my focus has always been Bitcoin.
The most valuable thing for me has been gaining a deeper understanding of how money and power structures work. Working with Bitcoin has given me the opportunity to make a real difference, far more effectively and proactively than during my ten years in municipal support work.
It has also challenged me to see the world more soberly – especially when it comes to Sweden's technological and economic future. We are living on old merits and if we don't jump on the bandwagon soon, we will become a technologically and economically underdeveloped country.
Goobit and BTCX have been active in bitcoin since 2012. What lessons have you learned over the years, and what is your focus today to strengthen and develop the crypto industry?
Our biggest focus is to lower the thresholds and make bitcoin accessible to more people. It's about educating, inspiring and building trust. We want companies to see the benefits of using bitcoin, both as a means of payment and as part of their capital savings. In addition, we are proud to have been a safe bridge into the bitcoin world for our customers for over twelve years!
We thank Rebecka Nakamato for the interview and wish her all the best in the future.
